The benefit of a bib is to help hold the chamois against the riders skin, reducing friction or saddle sores. With the Free bib Castelli found a way to do that but without the midsection and strap restrictions common in other bibs. First Castelli added support to the back strap area by moving the front straps backwards. This added stability over the shoulder and nearly eliminated the feeling of the straps altogether. Next Castelli took away excess fabric from the front of the bib in the stomach area. This reduced fabric pull over the stomach, increasing the ability to breathe deeper from the stomach muscles. It also improved moisture management in a high sweat area by eliminating an unnecessary layer of fabric letting the baselayer and jersey do their jobs. Finally Castelli handed their project to Simoni and the Saunier Duval Pro team for feedback. After more than 20 victories in their Saunier Duval version, they couldn’t imagine riding with anything else.
