Castelli have been around since 1876 but their real history began in the 1940’s when Arnando Castelli, working with the tailor Vittore Gianni (a small clothing company at the time), began making clothing for Gino Bartali and then Fausto Coppi.
Coppi wanted something better than Bartali was wearing so Armando suggested they change the material and use silk for his jersey instead of wool. Castelli creates, Coppi wears, Coppi wins. To the cycling apparel industry, Armando Castelli had just invented inventing.
Over the next few years Armando became tailor for the gods, Anquetil, Van Looy, Moilenaers, Bahamontes, Baldini, Magni and Riviere. Armando revolutionized the world of competitive cycling with his skin suits, chamois seats, rear pockets and zippered collars.
In 1974 Armando’s son Maurizio founded Castelli Sport, a company whose only goal was to create the most premium, next generation race clothing available. With the introduction of Lycra cyclists lined up to be clothed in Castelli. Merckx, Hinault and Moser all took advantage of the technological advances offered by Castelli.
Castelli continues its tradition of innovation providing one of the most advanced ranges of cycle clothing available today.
Simply put, this is the lightest cycling jersey we've ever created. This feat of science was achieved by using SG0.6, a revolutionary fabric that is polypropylene with a hollowed out core. The result is a jersey that weighs only 70 grams! That's less than half the weight of a typical jersey when dry. And less than a third when wet (only 140 grams compared to 400.) In champion terms, this amounts to a full minute in a Tour de France mountain stage.
SGO.6 : The worlds lightest known fiber suitable for cycling use. A hollow core fibre that is less than 60% the weight of traditional fabric. Made from polypropylene so it does not absorb water.
